This Instant Pot Harira Soup is a deliciously authentic Morrocan stew that makes a perfect appetizer or main course. It's a popular dish during Ramadan and it's bursting with flavor!
What Makes This Instant Pot Harira Soup So Delightfully Delicious
If you're never had Hirira soup before, I'll walk you through what you're missing. It's a thick, hearty soup filled with legumes and veggies.
It's seasoned with warm, exotic spices that whisk you away from the cool weather and make you love each bite more and more. The harissa paste makes this soup full of all the flavors you'd expect from a Moroccan dish!
I make this Harira soup easy by using a 15 bean mix. It's also traditional to make this soup with lentils, or other legumes, but I find the 15 bean mix gives it great flavor and wonderful texture.
I call for a homemade harissa paste in this recipe. It takes less than 5 minutes to make, will last for months, and is an excellent marinade for soups. It’s all spice with no tomatoes and whatnot, so do not substitute commercial harissa for this, as it will taste quite different.
How To Make The Homemade Harissa Paste
- Combine Ingredients. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine all the harissa ingredients.
- Microwave. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stirring halfway through the cooking time. (You can also heat this on the stovetop until the oil is hot and bubbling. Or, if you must use your air fryer for everything, cook in the air fryer at 350°F for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the paste is heated through.)
How To Make Instant Pot Harira Soup
- Add Ingredients. Place the unsoaked beans, tomatoes, carrots, onions, celery, harissa paste, turmeric, salt, pepper and water into the Instant Pot.
- Cook. Press PRESSURE COOK and cook on HIGH PRESSURE for 30 minutes. Allow pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes and then release all remaining pressure.
- Puree. Using the back of a spoon or an immersion blender, roughly puree some of the soup to thicken.
- Serve. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and parsley and serve.
Tips And Tricks For Making Harira Soup
- Make sure you use the homemade harissa paste to make this soup. It really makes a huge difference in how the soup turns out, and it's well worth the extra little bit of work.
- You can also use a package of frozen Mirepoix mix (onions, carrots, and celery) to make prep time faster.

Hi. I noticed you need a cup of tomato for the recipe. I didn’t see anywhere in the recipe about how it should be prepared. Will a can of diced or peeled tomatoes work?
URVASHI PITRE
Yes it will.

I’ve made this twice, once in the instapot with garbanzo beans, and once in a regular pot with Trader Joe’s refrigerated cooked lentils and their mirepoix mix, and I used a vegetable broth instead of water- I had some I had to use up. Anyway, it was great. The harissa paste is an excellent addition. I need to learn what else I can use it in. My vegan child normally gets this stew from a Mediterranean restaurant we go to. It’s a great recipe. At some point, I’ll get the bean mixture you recommend to try out. Thank you for this wonderful recipe.

This does look super-delicious, thanks for re-posting. I make a more traditional harira, with lots of locally-farmed lamb, lentils & veg, chickpeas, and noodles at the end. But this also inspires me to figure out how to adapt my own recipe to the Instant Pot, which would be awesome in terms of time and ease. I can't wait to try your harissa!
