Don’t skip out on dessert, or even brownies when you diet, but make this Chickpea Brownies recipe instead. Gluten-free brownies that taste like the real thing.
I’ll let you in on a wonderful secret. Every good thing you’ve ever heard about chickpea brownies is true. Yes, they taste delicious. Yes, really. Yes, they start with a can of chickpeas. No, you won’t taste the chickpeas in them. Yes, they truly are simple to make and so worth it.
I felt very deprived yesterday. Not only have I been hungry a lot these days, but it was Easter and I had no candy, no Reese’s peanut butter cups, no nothing good! I was feeling quite sorry for myself. So we made chickpea brownies.
I know, sounds disgusting. Sounds like one of those Pinterest things that seem miraculous and taste horrible. Sort of like those “mix a can of diet soda into cake mix” type of recipes. That on, by the way, was an epic fail for me. Tasted so horrible, it made me wonder why anyone would bother to eat it.
These chickpea brownies were not like that. They were truly amazing and I could not have told you the difference between these and regular brownies. There are a hundred different recipes on Pinterest for these, but we found one and then my husband kind of played around with it a little bit, and so this is what we did.
Be warned these are not exactly “health food”. They’re still somewhat high in sugar and carbs, but not as high as the real thing, and if you’re trying to avoid wheat, they work. Next time, I might try it with Truvia or Stevia only and see if they work, or perhaps sub applesauce for the honey. I’m also going to try to add protein powder to them and see if it makes it without denaturing through the cooking.
EQUIPMENT YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE THESE CHICKPEA BROWNIES:
- Measuring Cups
- My favorite Cutting Board
- A Good set of Kitchen Knives
- A Good blender to purée the chickpeas

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease an 8 x 8 pan.
- Mix all the ingredients (except chocolate chips) in a food processor.
- Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Pour in the greased pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
