Prepare the Onion

Peel the onion and cut it in half. Place each half flat side down and slice it into about 1/2-inch thick slices. Then, separate the slices into individual "petals" or rings, discarding any small or thin layers.

Make the Batter

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, beat the egg with the milk to create a smooth wet mixture.

Coat the Onion Petals

Dip each onion petal into the wet mixture, making sure it’s well-coated, then transfer it to the dry mixture. Press gently to ensure that the flour mixture sticks to the onion. Shake off any excess flour. Repeat this process for all the onion petals.

Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F for about 3 minutes. Preheating ensures the air fryer is hot enough to crisp the onion petals.

Air Fry the Onion Petals

Place the coated onion petals in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Be sure not to overcrowd the basket so that the air can circulate and cook the petals evenly. If your air fryer is smaller, you may need to cook them in batches. Lightly spray the onion petals with cooking spray or drizzle a small amount of olive oil over them to help them crisp up during cooking. Air fry them at 375°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time for an even, golden brown color.
